I ate at the Athens location last week and hit up Canal today. Clean restaurant, solid service and the boneless wings were a total standout. Not greasy or small. Good pieces of chicken cooked in clean oil. I'll be back.

food was roosters copy, and service very rude, surroundings were nice .cw memorabilia. they.have a very condescending attitude. Lot of talk and gossip between employees,I was sexually accosted one night by one of the employees .it was totally uncalled for...making fun ha ha ha.............not to me.

I found the staff to be very Iazy. Dirty tables. Took way to long for service. The bar had so many drunk older men using bad words and being loud. Not family friendly. They used to have no competition, but now with two other bar/restaurant within a two minute walk they really need to clean up the act if they want to stay in business.

This place is always busy. Right in the heart of historic Canal Winchester. The building was built right in the old canal. Awesome menu choices. So many good dishes from which to choose. I've read some Yelpers saying this is a Roosters knock-off. The owner was a Roosters employee, went out on his own, was not allowed to serve bone-in wings for 5 years due to a non-compete agreement. Now the menu is MUCH larger and better than Roosters.

This awesome little place is nestled on a cute street filled with shops and places to stop in. The downtown area is absolutely adorable, and for someone like me who was just visiting, was the perfect place to visit after doing some trail running nearby. Our group of 3 got seated quickly and ordered a round of beer. Their selection was good & they had a full bar as well. The interior matched the feel of the downtown area and was definitely a local favorite going by how many people were in there for lunch. All of us ordered a chicken salad and it was large and fresh but I wish it would have had more veggies on it. Like I said, it was a large salad but the toppings were sparse. The chicken was great however! Overall it was a nice lunch meal in a quaint area. We left happy and not hungry to continue on exploring the area.

I've been to Shade on the Canal many times since we moved about thirty minutes to its neck of the woods, mainly because there aren't a ton of local dine-in restaurants around us. I've always found the food to be OK if not a little bland, but after a very frustrating experience with management yesterday, I won't be back. My husband and I called in a pickup order yesterday on our way home. When we arrived, the host had trouble with our payment method (prepaid Visa card with plenty of availability on it). She struggled for a few minutes and called over who I'm assuming was an Assistant Manager or the Manager on Duty. She also struggled and said, "I've never gotten these prepaid cards to work with our system." I explained that they're Visa-branded and the point is they work anywhere Visa is accepted. We didn't have an alternate paymwnt method on us. After a half-hour wait, the AM/MOD came out and said that while her manager confirmed they take prepaid cards, they wouldn't take ours and were out of luck unless we wanted to go all the way home and come back with another card (hour round trip, mind you, while our food had already been getting cold on the host stand for the better part of 20 minutes). Management had an opportunity to make it right but didn't. They wasted our time. We stopped at a pizza place five minutes away and used the card without issue. TL;DR: Shade on the Canal needs to upgrade its POS system and learn how to treat customers. Two stars.

Having lunch with my friend who is gluten intolerant so when we decided to share a glutin free pizza. I was not expecting anything great. I was wrong we had the Greek pizza and it was amazing!! I had to ask the waitress if she maid a mistake before letting michelle continue to eat. They have a full gluten free menu.

Located in the heart of the village, Shade on the Canal feels like a visit to the living room of the town. It is always full of families, couples and friends out for a casual meal and maybe to watch a game on the TV's. The menu is extensive, with lots of diner selections, sandwiches, pizzas and salads. The onion rings are particularly good. The table service is friendly and efficient. If there can be said to be such a thing as a family bar, this place is a family bar! We come out here fairly often.

Big, roomy joint in downtown Canal.Family owned. Locals mostly working here. Bar area. Plenty of TVs. Definite atmosphere/feeling of "neighborhood establishment". There's plenty of sports teams' pictures and photos of the yesteryears lining the walls. Chose the chicken salad sandwich with fries on the side. I must say, quite good indeed! I like to be able to taste the different components of chicken salad. This sandwich did NOT disappoint. Just the right amount (light) of mayo/dressing. Clearly defined shredded chicken - great filling flavor. Big grape chunks. Thin rye swirl bread, lightly toasted. The sandwich was filling - two giant scoops of the chicken salad! The fries weren't bad; perhaps a tad softer. Natural potato flavor, better than tasting frying oil. The last few times I've had Shaw's, it's been take-out. Their Grilled Chicken Cobb Salad is also a healthy alternative I've had from here.

The service and food are aways great!! Today we had drinks asap and our appetizer in 10 minutes. Dinner came out just as we finished the appetizer. The food taste great!!!

I like Shade On the Canal because it combines a fun, different place to eat with a grown up spot for drinking. The menu has a nice variety, and the dessert is pretty tasty too.

I love Shades because they know exactly who they are and operate as such. What you see is what you get and it's awesome. Definitely family friendly and there is a separate bar area for adults wanting to have a bar experience. No wonder this is THE gathering place for the residents of CW. Service is always very friendly and attentive, the bar staff remembers your name if you're a semi-regular, and the food and drinks are always consistent. One time our food came out a little bit slow (I honestly didn't notice as I was enjoying a HUGE Miller Lite which is what you order there because it's Shades! I actually believe they have a larger beer on tap selection now) and (I'm guessing) the owner came out personally to apologize, deliver our food and gave us a gift certificate to come back. I'm telling you, I didn't notice that the food was slow, as this restaurant has the best service in downtown Canal Winchester. Shades has bar food and drinks for casual gatherings and Shades knows that and owns it. Yum.

I realize that there are not a lot of restaurant options in this general area, however, I'd rather take a longer trip somewhere w/food worth paying for or settle for b-dubs or O'Charley's who are right around the corner. The food is sub-par & the management is HORRENDOUS, so unless you're looking for a simple bar full of well drinks, save your time & money!

I have a good friend who lives in Canal Winchester, so I drive out here every now and then to dine with my friend at Shade. The interior is clean & comfortable, the service is friendly and timely, and the prices are reasonable. The waitresses do seem rather young as some of the other reviews state. Their food is good... but not great. For example, I had their 1/2 pound bayou burger on my most recent visit. It tasted good, but it was much smaller than you would expect. Since quoted burger weights are based on pre-cooking weight, I'm guessing they use a fairly fatty ground beef patty that shrinks significantly with cooking. They do have 10 or so beers on draft, but they tend to be your high volume, mainstream, popular varieties of beer. If you always like to drink the "usual" when you're out at the pub, you'll be happy. If you're looking to try a new beer, Shade might not be for you. I think this restaurant is a solid 3-stars, but I might just not be the restaurant's intended clientele. I personally prefer the Winking Lizard for their much larger beer menu.

On my tour of Ohio sports bars this place absolutely stood out. A hostess quickly sat our party and almost seamlessly a server greeted us and have us the specials. The place had a fantastic line up on draft including some great craft selections and the bartender was knowledgeable and was able to prepare our shots perfectly. Food was very good bar fare including some of the hottest wings I had while in Ohio (fatalis). Service was excellent, had several people check on us in addition to our server and the atmosphere was very laid back and guest-centric. The only real knock on the joint was that there weren't very many TV's set up in the dining room but the bar area had plenty of TVs set up so any sports fan could catch a variety of stuff all at once. Will definitely return anytime we are near this place.

I eat there once a month when we have union meetings. I really like a place that makes me feel good and this place does. Their salads are excellent, along with the boneless wings i get. Service is always good, we never have an empty glass.

Just passing through Canal Winchester and was looking for something local for lunch. Shades turned out to be a great choice. Started with some wings and then one of their specialty pizzas. The Abominable Snowman pizza was very good. Nice combination of meats with the bbq sauce.

Great wings and nachos. This place has a great vibe and the food quality is consistent. My new favorite place to eat in Canal

Want a bar that ripped off Roosters (legally, he was sued and was prohibited from selling, wings, i believe, but if you actually get sued for covenants not to compete, you are just copying what you know.) So, this is a roosters who do not have roosters. It is staffed with almost entirely female hs-college aged girls who were obviously hired because of their customer service skills. HA. (Seriously, for a guy who got hit with a lawsuit from roosters, you would think he would be well aware he is one bad interview away from a sexual discrimination lawsuit.) You get mediocre food, except for their French Onion soup. That is a star of a dish amongst Columbus eateries. You are probably going to get served by a college age girl who has enough respect to not work at kahoots, but not act like a ditsy interested in you server for all the horny laborers that frequent the bar come 4pm. You can ask for a water with your drink, and only after they go flirt with the drunk regulars, will they consider it. Also, they ask you to cash out at 6pm bc that is when the shift changes. That goes to show how little of the "team" is emphasized here. So you find the little tart cute and she will flirt with you, 5 stars, awesome!!! You see it for what it is, a knock-off roosters by a former manager who staffs it with dumb girls who look cute and don't know what is on the menu, and you "love it!" you may be a canal winchester local. If a server, ever, asked me to close my tab during happy hr for her tips at ANY OTHER BAR, she would be fired. This shit is encouraged here.

One of our go-to places for dinner with the kids. Great chicken wings. Almost anything you could want.

Shades is by far the best of the sports bar/family friendly causal restaurants in central Ohio. The wings are the best I have ever had. Pizzas are great! Virtually everything on the menu is wonderful. Our "go to" for great food.

    1. We sat next to a table of noisy, drunk, middle-aged married men who groped the waitresses the whole time we were there (seriously, I watched at least two of them grab the waitress's butt, and she couldn't have been older than 19 or 20). One of them tried to make conversation with me, even though I was very obviously with my boyfriend. I'm sure they were probably regulars, but still. Just. Ew. 2. Our food went to the wrong table. Twice. 3. We kept asking for napkins and nobody would bring us any. 4. An appetizer and grilled cheese sandwich (when they finally made it to our table) arrived at the same time. The appetizer was too hot to eat. The grilled cheese was cold. I'll pass.

Nice big portions and not too expensive. We've never dined in but have done take out a few times. Whenever we go pick up our order the place is packed and rather noisy. You can tell just when you call in your order they are super busy. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had but for a close local spot it's pretty good!

Very noisy and very very slow. Tried a blue cheese wedge salad and some hot wings. Struck out with both. Lettuce in the Salad had been sitting so wasnt very fresh and crispy, bacon bits were cheap baco bits soy immitation. Dressing was good but only so much you can cover up with dressing. Wings were not good, sauce was spicy but had no flavor of peppers or anything really just like spicy oil, once again i tried to rescue them with bue cheese dressing but as i'm currently experiencing gastrointestinal distress and thinking about what magazines i should take with me to the "library throne" im realizing that was a bad idea. Looks like a fun place and the servers are all cute little girls, might be an ok place if you just stick to beer.

We love Shades! We've moved out of the area and every time we return we visit Shades. Their wings, if you like breaded, are the best! They are always big and juicy. They offer a sampler of 25 wings for $20, you can choose 5 different sauces. We usually get 5 oriental, 10 hot (not scorching), 5 raging and 5 hoppin (like a hot bbq/red hot sauce with a sweet kick). They have homemade blue cheese dressing which is the best I've ever had. Their bayou burger is good, all their salads are fantastic and we love their cheesy fries. It is a restaurant/bar and is always busy. It is very similar to Roosters but we like the wings and the atmosphere better than Roosters. They also have very reasonable drink prices and a full bar. We've watched many, many OSU games here!!

Good food! Even a veggie burger for the Vegetarians out there like me. Decent selection of beer and nicely priced. One of the best Long Islands anywhere and for a decent price of $4!! Its in walking distance from my house so I enjoy going here often when I have the extra cash. They have a nice bar area with TVs and a fun crowd for OSU games or NFL games. I go here often about once every month or two and so far no complaints even when they are busy they have good service. Next time your around the Canal area you should stop in!

I thought this place was a little out of the way, but after having the food I was happy I went. Parking's not terrible since it's in downtown Canal. It wasn't too busy on a Friday night and the server was helpful and checked on us frequently. We ordered the wings plain (naked) and breaded. Both were really good and the sauces were good, also. We also ordered fried pickles (best I've ever had), two draft beers, and the cookie and ice cream (recommended by the server-it was a big cookie in a cast iron pie pan with ice cream on top). All of this was $30 or so. Can't beat that!

Shade on the Canal is a sports bar found in the southeast corner of the C-bus sprawl. It's operated in one form or another for almost 100 years. I find that endearing, but then again I'm a history nerd. Now I usually don't dig sports bars at all. I don't really like sports. I don't like televisions in restaurants. But I do like good food and beer, and Shade has plenty of both. Often at bar-and-grill-type places, the food tastes of its frozen past. Of course, I can't say that Shade's food hasn't been frozen, but it certainly doesn't taste like it has been. My favorite choice is the chili mac, which is mac & cheese with chili. Tasty indeed. I can also say that the burgers are good too. Tonight I had a smothered chicken sandwich. Chicken, ham and cheese -- yum. They make a fine pizza with a thin, cracker-like crust. It's sauce is sweet and chunky. The pie is a nice change of pace from pub grub. They also smoke their own brisket, pork and chicken, and though it is not as good as City BBQ or Hoggy's, it's still pretty darn good. I usually wash whatever I get down with a Newcastle. It's on tap. That's a big deal down here on the edge of Appalachia! If you're down in my neck of the woods and need a restaurant experience that doesn't involve a national chain, Shade is a great choice.

Very good wings! If you don't have a roosters near by, this the next best thing!

Downtown Canal Winchester is a great little area and Shades is in the heart of it. I think it's literally placed right where the canal used to run. The food and atmosphere is typical for a sports bar, though it is appropriate for families as the bar is in it's own section to the left of the main dining area. I have always had good service and food. They also have decent draft beers. what else.... support the local and go here over O'Charlies, BW3's or one of those other ones over off of Gender.

Been there 3 times now, and disappointed all 3 times. First visit I got the parm chicken sandwich which was dry and bland, and the fries were cold. Second trip I got the Texas burger and was simply terrible. The meat reminded me of the hamburgers we got in the school cafeteria...tasteless gray patties of mystery meat. Hard to believe they sell any, especially at $7.70 a piece! Third trip I got the Reuben, which wasnt bad, but the wings appetizer was disgusting. Soaked in grease, we could literally pour the oil from the plate. Only ate one. Service is as poor as the food is. Seems the entire wait staff is teen age girls who are unable to grasp the fundamentals of customer service. They were more interested in chatting with their friends and coworkers than providing decent service. And as stated, price are high. Strangely enough though, the place is busy, but that makes it very very noisy. Im guessing the lack of any other dining choice in the area may attribute to that. Oh, and they dont have an entry atrium, so in the winter, get ready to be blasted with cold air if you are in the front half of the restaurant. We wont be going back.

I bring my kids here for lunch sometimes, even though it has a bar, it is kid and family friendly. The salads are huge and very good. This is a good place to take the kids to eat after their sports games. The food is good and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Being new to the area and being introduced to Shade on the Canal was a treat! I love the long menu selection, but their Island sauce for the wings is my favorite hands down. Bathrooms are small, but I can overlook that.
